the plan

Every month I make a plan for the full moon, and hope for the best. This month I wanted to try a moonset… it’s supposed to be easier to line up the composition because you can track the moon as it gets to the right height.

The first step was to get find out the time and direction of the moonset: there’s an app for that! The way you get a huge moon in the sky is to use a big lens and back away from the subject. I was very far away from the houses.

Unfortunately, this picture is a composite, because my plan was foiled by cloud cover and too much light. The picture with the best light was during blue hour 30 minutes before sunrise. There was a beautiful reflection, and I was actually looking at a beautiful sunrise in the opposite direction. It was a shame I didn’t have two cameras set up.

At that time the moon wasn’t low enough in the sky, and as it got lower it was hidden by clouds – ugh! So, I used photoshop to lower the moon and create the photo I planned – now it’s called digital art.

I think the moon would have been a more golden color if it were that low in the sky, not the bright white that you see when it’s above. We’ll have to wait and see next time.

Pink Sunrise at Coral Cove 2

Sunrise at Coral Cove

It is super-convenient to have a sunrise location close to home. This is a popular place to watch the sun come up with lots of opportunities to create compositions with the rock formations.

Surf’s Up at the Pier

Juno Beach surfers were riding the waves while I tested my new camera and auto-focus tracking, a view from the pier.

Under the Pier

Including a pier in a photo is an excellent way to add leading lines to your composition. On this day I also had Sahara Dust as a diffuser.

Shooting from the Bridge

This is not an activity for the faint of heart… nor for those who are afraid of heights or falling. It is still a desirable angle for photographing the lighthouse.
